The Norwegian Nobel Committee has confirmed that a nomination for Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize was submitted using a stolen identity. Committee secretary Olav Njolstad told Norwegian news agency NTB that the same person is suspected of forging nominations in 2017 as well.
Njolstad declined to name the individual but stated that Norwegian police have been informed. He noted that while invalid nominations are common, this is the first known case of identity theft in the nomination process.
The Nobel Committee keeps nominee names secret for 50 years, but nominators—such as parliament members and academics—may disclose their choices. In January, Henrik Urdal of the Peace Research Institute Oslo confirmed Trump's nomination for the 2018 prize but said it lacked strong academic justification.
