Donald Trump has told Vladimir Putin that ending the war in Ukraine is critical and that he is prepared to help, according to Russia's Tass news agency. The phone call on Sunday, which lasted about an hour, was described as “friendly and frank” by Putin adviser Yuri Ushakov.
During the conversation, Trump also informed Putin that the United States is nearing a peace deal with Iran, as the US-Israel campaign against the country continues. The call comes ahead of the G7 meeting in France this week, where Ukraine is expected to be a key topic.
Trump also spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on ways to end the conflict. Zelenskyy said he wished Trump success in his efforts to end the war and updated him on the battlefield situation. “We have some good ideas that could help bring peace closer,” Zelenskyy said on Telegram.
The war between Russia and Ukraine has now lasted more than four years, longer than the First World War. Peace negotiations have largely stalled as the conflict in Iran continues, but Trump officials have stated they want the Ukraine war to end “as quickly as possible”.
During the call, Putin wished Trump a happy 80th birthday, calling him a “bright, remarkable person and politician”. Putin expressed confidence that together they could improve Russian-American relations and global security. The two leaders last met in Alaska in August 2025.
