Donald Trump has threatened to pull out of NATO as he directs the US to "review" claims to the Falkland Islands, aiming to punish Britain and other allies for refusing to support his war against Iran, according to documents.
Pentagon Email Reveals Plans
The shocking plan was reportedly nestled in an internal Pentagon email that outlined options to penalize NATO allies who declined to back his military campaign in the Middle East. Trump has lashed out at the defensive alliance after claiming he did not need assistance to crush the Iranian regime.
Trump's Demands and Threats
However, weeks into his flagging campaign to topple the regime, Trump demanded allies become involved and criticized nations that denied the US access to their bases. He has since threatened to leave NATO as a result of their refusal.
Among the punishments Trump is reportedly considering, reviewing support for European "imperial possessions" is included. This encompasses the Falkland Islands, situated off the coast of Argentina, a territory long claimed by both Britain and Argentina.
The US President was also understood to be contemplating expelling Spain from the alliance. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has adopted a defiant stance toward Trump after denying the US permission to use Spanish bases for strikes against Iran.
