Video footage from a reception at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday evening appears to show world leaders, including Boris Johnson, Justin Trudeau, and Emmanuel Macron, discussing Donald Trump. The exchange, captured by pool cameras and later edited by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, shows Trudeau remarking that Trump’s team’s “jaws drop to the floor” during his lengthy press conferences.
The leaders were gathered for a function to mark 70 years of Nato cooperation, but the summit has been overshadowed by disagreements over spending, future threats, and Turkey’s role. President Macron previously described Nato as experiencing “brain death,” a comment Trump called “very, very nasty.”
On the summit agenda, Turkey is threatening to block a defence plan for the Baltics and Poland unless Nato denounces Syrian Kurdish militias. Nato Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg acknowledged that a solution had not yet been found but expressed confidence that one would be reached.
Prime Minister Johnson downplayed the divisions, stating that “far more unites us than divides us” and reaffirming the alliance’s importance for collective security. Trump is scheduled to meet with Angela Merkel and other leaders before a closed-door summit session.
