President Donald Trump has once again drawn King Charles into the Iran conflict, boldly proclaiming that the monarch “would have probably helped” the United States with their offensive against Iran. The remarks came during a press conference in the Oval Office, just hours after King Charles and Queen Camilla departed Washington DC to continue their state visit on the East Coast.
King’s Address to Congress
Earlier, King Charles delivered a rousing address to Congress, in which he called for peace and togetherness during turbulent times in global politics. The monarch praised the work of NATO and made subtle criticisms of the Trump administration’s unpredictability. Trump, however, expressed disappointment with NATO, stating that the US had “asked them to do some things about Ukraine and Iran” but received insufficient support.
Trump’s Comments on the King
When asked about his meeting with the King, Trump said: “The King is fantastic. We spent a lot of time together. We talked a lot. We talked about this also. He loves his country, and he's a great King. And he's a great friend. I think if he were doing that, if that were up to him, he would have probably helped us with Iran.”
These statements come after Trump posted a threatening message on Truth Social, featuring an image of himself holding a gun with the words “No More Mr Nice Guy” and a caption warning Iran to “get smart soon” regarding a non-nuclear deal.
Diplomatic Implications
During the state dinner, Trump insisted that the King agrees with him on preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. However, as head of state, the King remains politically neutral and above party politics. A Buckingham Palace spokesperson stated: “The King is naturally mindful of his Government’s long-standing and well-known position on the prevention of nuclear proliferation.”
Trump also addressed his relationship with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, suggesting that his good rapport with the King could improve ties with the British government.
9/11 Memorial Visit
After leaving Washington DC, King Charles and Queen Camilla traveled to New York City to honor the victims and survivors of the 9/11 terror attacks. Joined by former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, the royal couple laid a wreath at the 9/11 Memorial. A handwritten note from the King read: “We honour the memory for those who so tragically lost their lives on 11th September 2001. We stand in enduring solidarity with the American people and in the face of their profound loss. Charles R Camilla.”
