The narrow maritime chokepoint, which Tehran had previously weaponised to retaliate against the United States by severing global oil supplies, has been declared "completely open," bringing an end to weeks of severe economic upheaval triggered by skyrocketing fuel prices across the world.
Trump's Triumphant Declaration
President Trump took to his Truth Social platform early on Friday, shortly after Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Araghchi posted on X that "the passage for all commercial vessels through Strait of Hormuz is declared completely open." This development came in light of a ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon that took effect late on Thursday.
In his initial post, Trump enthusiastically wrote that Iran had "JUST ANNOUNCED THAT THE STRAIT OF IRAN IS FULLY OPEN AND READY FOR FULL PASSAGE." Minutes later, he issued a correction, citing the correct name of the waterway and declaring it "COMPLETELY OPEN AND READY FOR BUSINESS AND FULL PASSAGE." He simultaneously asserted that the United States' blockade against Tehran would persist until what he termed "our transaction" was "100% complete."
Claims of a Resolved Dispute
In a subsequent phone interview with USA Today, Trump labelled the reopening a "great victory" and proclaimed the weeks-long dispute over the strait to be definitively "over." He further elaborated in a separate conversation with the television network NewsNation, claiming that Iran had also agreed to cease enriching uranium.
Adding another layer to his assertions, Trump posted again on Truth Social, stating that the United States would take possession of what he referred to as "Nuclear 'Dust'" – Iran's existing stockpile of already-enriched uranium. He vehemently denied that this agreement was connected to the Israeli-Lebanese ceasefire, directly contradicting the Iranian foreign minister's explicit statements linking the two events.
"Again! This deal is not tied, in any way, to Lebanon, but we will, MAKE LEBANON GREAT AGAIN!" Trump declared in his post, reiterating his signature political slogan in an international context.
