Plans are being drawn up for a major diplomatic event that will see former US President Donald Trump and his wife Melania hosted by the British monarchy on a full state visit, should he win the upcoming election.
The prospective trip, which would represent a significant moment for the UK-US 'Special Relationship', is understood to be in its early planning stages. It would involve the full pomp and ceremony reserved for the closest allies of the United Kingdom.
A Return to Royal Protocol
A state visit is the most prestigious category of visit offered to a foreign leader, featuring a ceremonial welcome with carriages and a state banquet hosted by the monarch at Buckingham Palace. Mr Trump's first visit to the UK as President in 2019 was a working visit, a tier below the grandeur of a full state occasion, which was hosted by the late Queen Elizabeth II for his predecessor, Barack Obama.
This time, the honour of hosting would fall to King Charles III and Queen Camilla. The Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton, is also expected to play a prominent role in the welcoming ceremonies and events, adding a modern touch to the traditional proceedings.
