Thailand has accused Cambodia of a “flagrant violation” of a fragile ceasefire along their border, claiming Cambodian forces launched an overnight attack. The alleged breach occurred in Sisaket province, with Thai troops reportedly coming under small arms fire and grenade assaults until Wednesday morning.
This is the second time Thailand has accused Cambodia of breaking the truce, which began on Tuesday following five days of clashes that killed at least 43 people. The initial armistice got off to a shaky start when Bangkok claimed Cambodian forces continued attacks in a “clear attempt to undermine mutual trust”. Cambodia has consistently denied violating the agreement.
Despite the accusations, Thai government spokesperson Jirayu Huangsab stated that the Thai side maintained control of the situation and that general conditions along the border were normal from 8am Wednesday. Meetings between rival commanders had gone ahead on Tuesday, with de-escalation steps agreed including a halt on troop reinforcements.
The conflict, centred on a long-standing territorial dispute, has displaced more than 300,000 people from the border region. The ceasefire was brokered in Malaysia with intervention from US President Donald Trump, as both Thailand and Cambodia seek trade deals to avoid his threatened tariffs.
