Former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra departed Thailand on Thursday, triggering widespread speculation about his future. His private jet initially headed towards Singapore but later changed course to Dubai, where he previously lived in self-imposed exile.
Thaksin's departure comes ahead of a court ruling next week that could see him returned to prison. He was sentenced to eight years in 2023 but had his term commuted to one year and was released on parole after less than 24 hours in custody, citing health issues.
Thai police confirmed that no court order prevented him from leaving the country. Thaksin stated on social media that he intended to visit Singapore for a medical appointment but was delayed by immigration, forcing him to alter his plans to Dubai.
He assured the public that he would return to Thailand by Monday and attend court on Tuesday for the judgment. The legal case concerns whether he has adequately served his sentence under the parole arrangement.
Meanwhile, Thailand's parliament is set to vote on a new prime minister on Friday, with Anutin Charnvirakul expected to succeed Thaksin's ousted daughter, Paetongtarn Shinawatra.
