Keir Starmer Urges Putin to Face Justice Over Ukraine War Crimes
Starmer: Putin must face justice for Ukraine war crimes

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has demanded that Russian President Vladimir Putin be brought to justice for alleged war crimes committed during the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, Starmer emphasised the need for international accountability, stating that Putin must "face the consequences of his actions."

Starmer also took aim at former US President Donald Trump, criticising his recent comments suggesting that the US might not defend NATO allies who fail to meet defence spending targets. "Undermining NATO at such a critical time is reckless," Starmer said, stressing the importance of Western unity in supporting Ukraine.

Zelensky's Plea for Support

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who also addressed the conference, renewed his call for military aid, warning that delays in assistance are costing lives. "Every day without sufficient weapons means more Ukrainian soldiers and civilians will die," he said.

Starmer echoed Zelensky's concerns, pledging that a future Labour government would maintain Britain's support for Ukraine. "We cannot allow aggression to go unchecked," he declared.

Political Reactions

The Labour leader's remarks come amid growing pressure on Western governments to sustain military and financial aid to Kyiv. Meanwhile, Trump's NATO comments have sparked controversy, with critics accusing him of emboldening Putin.

As the war approaches its third year, Starmer’s intervention highlights the deepening geopolitical divide over Ukraine's future and the broader implications for global security.
