Irish President Michael D Higgins has commended the Princess Royal for her “significant contribution” to UK-Ireland relations during a meeting at Áras an Uachtaráin in Dublin. The visit, described as a courtesy call, marked Anne’s second trip to the presidential residence.
During the meeting, the Princess Royal remarked on the warmer weather compared to previous encounters and praised President Higgins and his wife Sabina for attending rugby matches with her. Higgins, who has served as president for 14 years, noted that his term ends in November.
In a statement, Higgins said: “It was a pleasure to renew my conversations with Her Royal Highness Princess Anne… and to recognise the significant contribution which she has made over so many years to the relationship between our two countries.” He also acknowledged her work in equestrian sports and therapy services.
Anne is in Ireland for the 150th Dublin Horse Show at the Royal Dublin Society, where she will tour exhibitions and present awards. She competed in the 1976 Montreal Olympics in equestrian events.
British Ambassador Paul Johnston said the visit “underscores the deep and enduring friendship between the United Kingdom and Ireland.” The royal family has a history of engagement with Ireland, including Queen Elizabeth II’s historic 2011 state visit.
