Irish President Michael D Higgins has commended the Princess Royal for her “significant contribution” to UK-Ireland relations during a meeting at Áras an Uachtaráin in Dublin. The visit, described as a courtesy call, saw Anne meet President Higgins and his wife, Sabina, for the second time at the presidential residence.
During the meeting, Anne remarked on the warmer weather compared to previous encounters and praised the President and his wife for attending rugby matches with her. President Higgins noted his 14-year tenure, which will end in November, and extended best wishes to King Charles, acknowledging his support for peace and reconciliation.
Following the meeting, President Higgins issued a statement recognising Anne’s contributions to equestrian sports and related therapy services. He also highlighted her longstanding role in fostering bilateral ties. The Princess Royal is in Ireland for the 150th Dublin Horse Show at the Royal Dublin Society, where she will tour exhibitions and present awards.
British Ambassador to Ireland Paul Johnston said the visit underscores the enduring friendship between the two nations and Anne’s lifelong interest in equestrianism and charitable work. Anne, who competed in the 1976 Montreal Olympics, will also meet representatives from equine therapy charities.
The visit continues a tradition of royal engagements at Áras an Uachtaráin, including Queen Elizabeth II’s historic 2011 trip and the Prince and Princess of Wales’ 2020 visit. Anne previously visited in 2004, meeting then-President Mary McAleese.
