Norway hits back with toilet humour after Trump slur

Norway's official tourist board has responded with humour after US President Donald Trump branded the nation a "s***house country" during a campaign rally in Michigan on Sunday. In a Facebook post, Visit Norway acknowledged the remark and showcased some of the country's most elegant toilets, writing: "We heard some noise about the 's***house country'. Well, what we can say, we do have some of the most spectacular toilets in the world. With Love, Visit Norway."

Trump's Nobel Prize Grievance

Trump's outburst came as he discussed immigration policy, saying he would allow people from select countries but would not admit Norwegians "because I didn't get the Nobel Prize". The president has repeatedly criticised Norway since returning to office in 2025 over disputed claims to the Nobel Peace Prize.

The Nobel Peace Prize this year went to Navi Pillay, a South African former International Criminal Court (ICC) judge and rights defender. Trump claimed to have "never heard" of Pillay, calling her a "mystery person" and adding: "This is an indelible stain on the country of Norway...we will not forget."

Norway's Response

The prize is famously not awarded by the nation of Norway; winners are selected by the Nobel Prize Committee, which operates independently of Norway's government. Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide responded to Trump's remarks by noting that the president understands the government has no involvement in the prize, saying: "He knows very well that the Nobel Committee is independent. We have reminded him of that, in case anyone is wondering - and that is still the case."
