Mexico has launched an investigation into a possible breach of its constitution following reports that two US embassy officials who died in a car accident after a drug raid were CIA agents. The incident occurred on Sunday in the border state of Chihuahua, where the officials were returning from a raid on a drug lab when their vehicle plunged down a 200-metre ravine.
President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that neither she nor her cabinet were aware of the operation, which may violate Mexico's national security law requiring prior federal approval for joint operations. She confirmed that the attorney general will investigate whether the US involvement breached the constitution.
The US embassy has acknowledged the deaths but has not commented on reports that the officials were CIA operatives. The incident comes amid heightened tensions between Mexico and the US, with President Donald Trump demanding stronger action against drug trafficking while Sheinbaum defends Mexican sovereignty.
Chihuahua's attorney general initially stated that the Americans died while returning from an operation to dismantle clandestine laboratories, but later claimed US instructors only arrived after the raid for training purposes. Sheinbaum warned that if the investigation confirms a joint operation, sanctions would be reviewed.
