The two Americans, confirmed by The Associated Press to be CIA agents, were part of a convoy when their vehicle drove off a ravine and exploded. Two Mexican officers also lost their lives in the accident. Local government officials initially stated that the convoy was involved in a joint operation, but Mexico's Ministry of Security has since clarified that the U.S. agents were not permitted to engage in operations on Mexican soil.
