Mexico's President Slams Trump's 'Irresponsible' Remarks on Cartel Crackdown
Mexico slams Trump's cartel military strike proposal

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has fiercely condemned former US President Donald Trump's suggestion that the US should deploy military forces to combat drug cartels in Mexico, calling the remarks "irresponsible" and a violation of national sovereignty.

Trump, who is campaigning for the 2024 Republican nomination, recently stated that he would authorise US military strikes against cartel operations if re-elected. López Obrador responded by accusing Trump of using Mexico as a "campaign prop" and warned against any foreign intervention.

Escalating Tensions

The Mexican leader emphasised that his government is fully capable of handling domestic security issues without external interference. "Mexico is not a colony or a protectorate of any foreign power," he declared during a press conference.

This latest exchange highlights ongoing tensions between the two nations over security cooperation. While the Biden administration has pursued a more diplomatic approach, Trump's hardline rhetoric has reignited debates about cross-border military action.

Security Challenges

Mexico continues to grapple with powerful drug cartels like Jalisco New Generation, which operate with near-impunity in some regions. However, López Obrador maintains that military solutions alone won't resolve the complex issues of drug trafficking and organised crime.

Security analysts warn that Trump's proposals could destabilise bilateral relations and potentially escalate violence along the US-Mexico border. The Mexican government has reiterated its commitment to peaceful solutions and respect for national sovereignty.
