Melania Trump announced on Friday that eight Ukrainian children have been reunited with their families after her letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin. The first lady wrote to Putin in August, and the letter was hand-delivered by her husband, Donald Trump, during a meeting in Alaska.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has involved the seizure of Ukrainian children, who are taken to Russia to be raised as Russians. The International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Putin for war crimes, accusing him of personal responsibility for the abductions.
In response to her letter, Putin established an “open channel of communication” regarding the welfare of the children, Mrs Trump said. “We have agreed to cooperate with each other for the benefit of all people involved in this war,” she told reporters at the White House.
The eight children were reunited with their families “over the past 24 hours”, she added. Donald Trump, who promised as a candidate to end the war within a day, has expressed frustration in recent weeks at not achieving this.
