New planning documents have disclosed details of the extensive renovations at Frogmore Cottage, the Windsor home of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. The Grade II listed building, gifted by the Queen, is undergoing a refurbishment that insiders claim could cost up to £3 million, funded by the Sovereign Grant.
The documents, published by the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, outline plans to add fireplaces, staircases, and a floating floor, while preserving original floorboards and shutters. The cottage, previously five staff flats, is being transformed into a ten-bedroom family home ahead of the couple's move in spring 2019.
A source told the Daily Mirror that the property was in an 'extremely run down condition' and required significant restoration. The Duchess of Sussex has been closely involved in the design, corresponding regularly with the planning team to create a 'comfortable country life' away from London. Security measures are also being upgraded, with the site described as 'like Fort Knox'.
The renovations are double the cost of the refurbishment of Anmer Hall, the country home of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. While the building work is covered by taxpayers, the couple will pay for furnishings. The couple currently reside in Nottingham Cottage at Kensington Palace.
