Martin Kemp Rescued by Fire Brigade After Hour-Long Lift Ordeal Before Gig
Martin Kemp Rescued from Lift by Fire Brigade Before Falkirk Gig

Martin Kemp's Pre-Gig Lift Drama Ends with Fire Brigade Rescue

Singer and former Spandau Ballet star Martin Kemp found himself in an unexpected predicament last Saturday when he became trapped in a lift for a full hour just before he was due to perform at a gig in Falkirk. The 64-year-old musician shared the ordeal on Instagram, posting a video that showed him and his production team squeezed inside a small lift as they awaited rescue.

Keeping Spirits High During the Wait

In an effort to maintain a light-hearted atmosphere during the stressful situation, Martin could be seen playfully posing in the lift's mirror. He then turned the camera on his team, going in for close-up shots of their faces to elicit laughter and keep morale up. The clip was set to the song Trapped by Colonel Abrams, adding a humorous touch to the shared experience.

After sixty minutes of confinement, the fire brigade arrived and removed one side of the lift door, allowing Martin and his team to squeeze out to safety. In his Instagram caption, Martin wrote: 'Stuck in a lift for an hour!! Before tonight’s gig at City Falkirk… but I still had fun# thank you so much Falkirk Fire Brigade for rescuing all of us!!!!'

Current Tour and Recent TV Appearance

Martin is currently embarked on a Back to the 80s DJ tour across the United Kingdom, with scheduled dates running from February through December. This lift incident occurred just weeks after his exit from the I'm A Celebrity jungle, where he made a playful dig at his former Spandau Ballet bandmate Tony Hadley.

During an appearance on Good Morning Britain, Martin reflected on his time in the reality competition. When asked who would make a good James Bond villain, he cheekily suggested Tony Hadley, flashing a smile as he delivered the jibe. Martin had previously revealed on the show that he once auditioned for the role of James Bond himself.

Background on Spandau Ballet

Spandau Ballet, originally featuring Martin Kemp, Tony Hadley, Gary Kemp, Steve Norman, and John Keeble, rose to fame in the 1980s with hits like Gold and True. The band split in 1990, leading to a legal battle over songwriting royalties involving Tony, Steve, and John against Gary Kemp.

Although the group reformed in 2009 for a greatest hits tour, seemingly putting past conflicts behind them, Tony Hadley left the band again in 2017. Martin's recent light-hearted comment about Tony adds a new layer to their long-standing relationship, which has seen both collaboration and public banter over the years.
