Malcolm in the Middle Revival: Why Original Dewey Actor Erik Per Sullivan Declined Return
The highly anticipated Malcolm in the Middle revival series has finally premiered on Disney+ as of April 10, 2026, reuniting fans with television's most chaotic family two decades after the original show concluded. This special four-part limited series, with all episodes released simultaneously for binge-watching, sees most of the original cast reprising their iconic roles, but one key member is notably absent: Erik Per Sullivan, the original actor who portrayed Dewey.
Cast Returns and a Notable Absence
Frankie Muniz returns as Malcolm, joined by Justin Berfield and Christopher Masterson as his brothers Reece and Francis, respectively. Bryan Cranston, who gained fame in Breaking Bad, makes a comeback as father Hal, while Jane Kaczmarek resumes her role as the strict matriarch Lois. However, Sullivan will not be returning; instead, the character of Dewey is now played by actor Caleb Ellsworth-Clark.
Revelations from Co-Stars
Jane Kaczmarek has disclosed that Sullivan was initially offered the opportunity to return but declined. In an interview with The Guardian, she explained, "He's studying Dickens and is an incredible student. They offered him buckets of money to come back, and he just said, 'No thank you.'" Frankie Muniz added further insight, stating, "He's very happy in the life that he's created outside of the entertainment world. And he made the decision that he didn't want to get back into it—which we completely respect. We had his blessing from day one to have the role be in the show and recast it. So I hope people aren't too upset that he didn't come back, but it was by his choice."
Sullivan's Post-Acting Journey
After Malcolm in the Middle ended, Sullivan appeared in a handful of films before leaving acting behind to pursue academic interests. He eventually secured a place at Harvard University, where he has been focusing on his studies, including literature such as Dickens. This decision highlights his commitment to education over a return to Hollywood, despite lucrative offers.
The revival series marks a significant moment for fans, offering a nostalgic look at the beloved family while introducing new elements. Sullivan's absence, though felt, is respected by the cast and crew, who emphasize his personal choice and ongoing academic pursuits.
