A Russian air attack on Kyiv overnight wounded eight residents of an apartment building, including a three-year-old child, Ukrainian authorities said on Monday. Four of the injured were hospitalised, with one in serious condition, according to Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s military administration. Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that the blast wave damaged windows from the 6th to 11th floors of the building in the Darnytskyi district. The attack occurred shortly after midnight, with air raid alerts lasting several hours across the capital and most of Ukraine.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and US President Donald Trump were expected to discuss the war in Ukraine during their meeting in Scotland on Monday. Downing Street stated that the talks would include “applying pressure” on Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the invasion. Trump praised Starmer for doing a “very good job” ahead of the talks, which will also cover the Middle East and trade. The meeting follows Trump’s announcement of a tariffs deal between the US and the European Union after talks with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Sunday.
Von der Leyen called on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to uphold independent anti-corruption bodies, describing them as “cornerstones of Ukraine’s rule of law”. Zelenskyy submitted draft legislation on Thursday to restore the independence of Ukraine’s anti-corruption agencies, reversing an earlier bill that would have stripped their autonomy. He thanked the European Commission for its expertise and stressed the importance of adopting the bill without delay, possibly as early as next week.
Russia scaled down its Navy Day celebrations on Sunday, cancelling parades in St Petersburg, Kaliningrad, and Vladivostok due to security concerns amid continuing Ukrainian drone attacks. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov cited “security reasons” for the cancellation. The Russian defence ministry reported downing 99 Ukrainian drones overnight, with another 51 shot down near St Petersburg later in the day. A man was killed and three others injured by drone fragments in the region. President Putin, visiting St Petersburg, vowed to build more warships and intensify naval training.
French President Emmanuel Macron spoke with Zelenskyy on Sunday, reaffirming France’s support for Kyiv and vowing to raise pressure on Moscow to agree to a ceasefire that paves the way for talks leading to a solid and lasting peace with full European involvement.
