King Charles Praises US-UK Friendship in Congress Speech

King Charles has delivered a historic address to the US Congress, highlighting the enduring bond between Britain and America while emphasising the importance of Nato, support for Ukraine and action on climate change. The speech, marking the 250th anniversary of American independence, was the first by a British monarch to Congress in 35 years.

Charles described the alliance between the two nations as 'truly unique' and praised the 'special relationship' that has endured for centuries. He noted that 'the actions of this great nation matter' and urged continued cooperation in defence of shared values. The King also referenced the principle of checks and balances rooted in Magna Carta, drawing approval from Democratic lawmakers.

On Ukraine, Charles called for 'unyielding resolve' to secure a 'just and lasting peace' for the country and its people. He underlined the role of Nato in protecting citizens and interests, stating that the alliance's commitment lies at the heart of transatlantic security. The King also backed the Aukus submarine programme with Australia, describing it as 'the most ambitious in history'.

The King addressed the climate crisis, warning that the collapse of natural systems threatens prosperity and national security. He urged the current generation to decide how to tackle environmental challenges, referencing the 'natural wonders' of the United States. He also highlighted the strength of bilateral trade, worth $430bn annually, and mutual investment of $1.7tn.

Charles’s visit, which included a private arrival at the White House, comes amid tensions between the Trump administration and the UK government over trade policy and foreign affairs. Despite differences, the King’s speech was framed as a diplomatic reaffirmation of the partnership between the two nations.
