King Charles III has issued a powerful written message to the people of Ukraine, emphatically declaring "we stand with you" as the world approaches the fourth anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion.
A Message of Solidarity on a Dual Anniversary
The King's statement was released to mark the first anniversary of the 100-Year Partnership between the UK and Ukraine, a significant bilateral treaty. This commemoration comes just weeks before the sombre milestone of four years since the war began on 24 February 2022.
In his message, Charles expressed the profound hope shared by him and the Queen that Ukraine can achieve a "just and lasting peace that safeguards its security, sovereignty and prosperity". He acknowledged the ongoing anguish felt by families across Ukraine and around the globe.
High-Level Diplomacy and Partnership Pillars
The diplomatic significance of the moment was underscored by the reported travel of Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy to Ukraine. He is attending a forum linked to the centenary partnership to discuss future cooperation between the two nations.
The UK-Ukraine 100-Year Partnership, established through a formal treaty and political declaration, is built on several key pillars designed to create long-term resilience. These include:
- Enhanced military and maritime security collaboration.
- Cooperation in healthcare, disease prevention, and agricultural technology.
- Joint ventures in emerging sectors like the space industry.
- Strengthened cultural and educational ties through exchanges and classroom projects.
A Consistent Voice of Support
King Charles has been a consistent public supporter of Ukraine since the early days of the conflict. He has personally met numerous Ukrainians who found sanctuary in the UK at various events. His commitment was further highlighted in his recent Christmas Day broadcast, which featured the Songs for Ukraine Chorus.
Concluding his latest message, the King praised the "extraordinary example to the world" set by Ukraine's valiant strength. He stated he is "constantly impressed by the sheer bravery, courage and resilience shown by the Ukrainian people," hoping the flourishing bonds between the nations offer moral support during this immensely difficult time.
