King Charles III is set to make history by addressing the French Parliament during his upcoming state visit to France, marking a significant moment in UK-France diplomatic relations. The visit, scheduled for later this year, will see the monarch become the first British sovereign to speak before both houses of the French legislature.
Strengthening Bilateral Ties
The address is expected to underscore the enduring partnership between the United Kingdom and France, focusing on shared values and cooperation on global challenges such as climate change, security, and economic resilience. A royal aide confirmed that the speech will highlight the deep historical and cultural connections between the two nations.
Historic Precedent
While British monarchs have visited France before, addressing the French Parliament is unprecedented. The last British royal to speak to French lawmakers was Queen Elizabeth II in 2004, but she addressed a joint session of parliament, not both houses separately. King Charles's address will be a full parliamentary address, akin to the Queen's speech in the UK.
The visit also includes meetings with President Emmanuel Macron and other French officials, as well as cultural engagements in Paris and Bordeaux. The trip was originally planned for March 2023 but was postponed due to civil unrest in France over pension reforms.
King Charles, known for his environmental advocacy, is also expected to use the platform to call for stronger international action on climate change. The address will be delivered in English, with French translations provided for lawmakers.
