Kerry Katona Overlooked for I'm A Celebrity All Stars Due to Brutal Honesty Concerns
ITV executives have reportedly decided against including Kerry Katona in the I'm A Celebrity All Stars lineup, citing fears that her notoriously blunt and unfiltered personality might not resonate with contemporary viewers and could potentially harm the show's ratings. This decision comes despite Katona's historic win as Queen of the Jungle in 2004, a victory that once made her synonymous with the programme's success.
Changing Times and Audience Sensitivities
According to insider sources, television producers believe that audience expectations and sensitivities have evolved significantly since Katona's original jungle triumph. They are now navigating what is described as a "fine line" in maintaining viewer satisfaction, with concerns that Katona's willingness to discuss deeply personal topics—including divorces, bankruptcy, and past substance abuse—could prove too polarising for today's broadcast environment.
The 45-year-old mother of five, who has remained a fixture on various reality shows since her 2004 victory, was not selected for either the 2023 All Stars series or the current edition, which concludes on Friday, April 24. Although her name has been repeatedly suggested for inclusion, decision-makers have remained divided, ultimately opting for caution.
Internal Conflicts and Production Risks
A source close to the production told The Sun: "Everyone at I’m a Celeb loves Kerry and they’ll always back her as one of the most popular winners of the show. But times have changed and bosses have such a fine line to tread when it comes to keeping the audience happy. Kerry will tell you herself she’s like marmite, you either love her or you hate her!"
The source further explained that there are substantial logistical and psychological assessments involved in selecting contestants who can withstand the demanding jungle environment. "There are also big hoops to jump through when it comes to who can cope in such an environment. She was actually considered for the current All Stars series but not everyone was on board. Sadly, it looks like – despite her being synonymous with the show – she’ll never get a chance to do it again," they added.
Katona's Own Admission and Future Prospects
Kerry Katona has publicly acknowledged the repeated rejections, expressing her disappointment in a previous interview. She stated: "I keep getting turned down for some reason. I think it’d be f**king amazing. I’ve been to the interviews for both series. And they said, ‘Definitely, Kerry. You were the first queen and had the highest ratings,’ but then they never came back. I’d do it in a heartbeat, not even to win it. Just for me."
The primary concern among producers appears to be Katona's "big mouth" and her refusal to be filtered, raising anxieties about unpredictable post-filming comments, especially given the series is recorded well in advance of broadcast. This unpredictability is seen as a significant risk that ITV is unwilling to take.
Despite this setback with ITV, Kerry Katona is reportedly in discussions to front her own reality television programme, building on the success of her previous fly-on-the-wall series, The Next Chapter, which concluded in 2011. This potential new venture could offer her a platform to showcase her unfiltered persona without the constraints of the I'm A Celebrity format.
The Mirror has reached out to both ITV and a representative for Kerry Katona for an official comment on these reports, but no statement has been issued at this time.
