Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos encountered a tense moment with guest Howie Mandel during Monday's episode of their morning show, after a comment about his age sparked a defensive reaction from the comedian.
The 70-year-old actor and comedian took issue when the hosts mentioned his age, leading to a back-and-forth exchange. Ripa began by saying, "It doesn't make any sense," to which Mandel replied, "What do you mean it doesn't make any sense? That I look great?" He further explained, "When you tell someone you're 70, and they say you look great… it's like saying you're smart for a stupid person." Ripa clarified that they were not saying he looked great for his age, but rather that he looked great overall.
The tension eased as Mandel shared his fitness secrets, crediting actor Jerry O'Connell for introducing him to a unique pool workout involving cables and paddles. He also discussed his healthy diet, love for vegetables and fruit, and his daily running habit, which he described as his meditation.
Ripa and Consuelos are no strangers to awkward on-air moments, often bringing their own relationship issues to the show. Consuelos noted that he prefers to discuss sensitive topics on air, saying, "That way, I have safety in numbers."
