US Vice-President JD Vance is set to spend an extended summer holiday in the Cotswolds, a choice that columnist Marina Hyde suggests places him among “the absolute worst people in the country”. The trip follows a series of recent vacations, including a skiing holiday in Vermont, a family visit to Disneyland, and a kayaking trip in Ohio where his security detail reportedly altered a lake’s water flow.
Vance’s Cotswolds accommodation is an 18th-century manor house with six acres of grounds and a tennis court, according to the Daily Mail. The property is close to Jeremy Clarkson’s Diddly Squat farm; Clarkson has previously described Vance as a “bearded God-botherer” and “twat”. The Vances are also expected to visit Foreign Secretary David Lammy at Chevening this weekend.
Hyde criticises Vance’s frequent holidays, noting that in the UK such behaviour would earn a politician an unflattering nickname. She also contrasts the US’s ability to reroute rivers for a VP’s kayaking with the UK’s sewage problems, sarcastically inviting Vance to kayak in British rivers. The columnist suggests that in the Cotswolds, Vance may not even be the most unpleasant person present, given the area’s reputation.
