Irish political leaders have strongly condemned Israel's detention of the Irish president's sister, who was participating in an aid flotilla mission to Gaza. Taoiseach Micheal Martin described the detention of Irish citizens as "wrong" and "unacceptable."
Detention of Irish Citizens
Dr Margaret Connolly, sister of President Catherine Connolly, is among 12 Irish citizens on board the flotilla that were detained by Israeli authorities, according to organisers. The Global Sumud Flotilla reported that 10 boats from a 60-vessel fleet were intercepted in international waters and boarded by Israeli forces shortly after 9am on Monday. Contact has been lost with the intercepted vessels.
President's Reaction
President Connolly described the incident as "quite upsetting" and expressed pride in her sister but also deep concern for her safety. Tanaiste Simon Harris conveyed his sympathy, stating, "I was very struck by the president's comments... my heart goes out to President Connolly and her family, and indeed all the families of those detained."
Government Response
Mr Harris condemned Israel's actions as "illegal" and a breach of international law. He questioned the effectiveness of verbal condemnation, noting that "Israel doesn't really care very much for people's words." He emphasised the need for concrete actions, referencing the Occupied Territories Bill and EU-level measures.
Taoiseach Martin reiterated that Israel's behaviour in international waters is "unacceptable" and affirmed the right to protest and highlight the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. He stated, "We will be raising this at European Union level... particularly in terms of sanctions on settlers, for example, who are to a large extent being facilitated by the Israeli government."
