Royal Navy Destroyer HMS Dragon Deploys to Middle East Amid Iran Tensions
HMS Dragon Heads to Middle East Amid Iran Crisis

The Royal Navy Type 45 destroyer HMS Dragon is being dispatched to the Middle East to pre-position for a potential multinational mission aimed at safeguarding commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. The vessel will move from the eastern Mediterranean, where it has been defending British bases on Cyprus, to a location ready to join a UK and French-led coalition once conditions allow.

A fragile ceasefire between Iran and US-Israeli forces remains in place, though recent attacks on Friday saw US forces strike two Iranian tankers attempting to breach a blockade imposed by former President Donald Trump. The proposed mission, championed by UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron, would involve a coalition of nations committed to ensuring freedom of navigation through the strategic waterway, a vital route for global oil, gas, and other commodities including fertiliser.

A Ministry of Defence spokesperson confirmed: “We can confirm that HMS Dragon will deploy to the Middle East to pre-position ahead of any future multinational mission to protect international shipping when conditions allow them to transit the Strait of Hormuz. The pre-positioning of HMS Dragon is part of prudent planning that will ensure that the UK is ready, as part of a multinational coalition jointly led by the UK and France, to secure the strait, when conditions allow.”

Oil Tanker Crew Member Recalls Attack

A crew member aboard the MKD Vyom oil tanker, which was struck during US-Israeli airstrikes on Iran on March 1, has described the harrowing experience. The anonymous sailor told The Guardian: “There were immense shockwaves and a fireball. For one or two seconds, I was knocked out. Everything went black. The power was gone. I looked up - fire and thick black smoke was pouring down.” The explosion tore through the engine room, killing 32-year-old Dixit Solanki. The sailor added: “The engine room had been destroyed. There were metal pipes, insulation covers, tanks, torn apart. A 2cm-thick solid fire door, glass windows - bang, all gone. I thought: ‘I’m alive. I have to get out of here.’” Since March 1, ten sailors have been killed in 32 attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz and the wider region.

Diplomatic Efforts and Ceasefire Strains

On Friday, US forces struck two Iranian-flagged oil tankers attempting to breach the blockade, according to US Central Command. Iran’s Foreign Ministry condemned the strikes as a “clear violation” of the ceasefire. Meanwhile, Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian stated on social media that “colonialism and exploitation have no place in the future world,” while a military source warned that “there is still a possibility of re-entering such conflicts in the region” if the US disturbs Iranian vessels.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed hope for a serious response from Tehran to Washington’s peace proposal, saying, “I hope it’s a serious offer.” Reports suggest US-Iran talks could resume as early as next week in Islamabad, Pakistan, with mediators working on a one-page, 14-point memorandum of understanding to set parameters for a month of negotiations focused on ending the war.

Regional Escalation and Casualties

Hezbollah claimed 26 attacks on Israeli forces in southern Lebanon since Thursday, as Israeli airstrikes killed at least 31 people on Friday, marking one of the deadliest days since the conflict with Hezbollah resurged on March 2. The UAE reported intercepting two ballistic missiles and three drones from Iran, with three people wounded. Since the start of Iranian attacks, the UAE says its air defences have engaged 551 ballistic missiles, 29 cruise missiles, and 2,263 UAVs.

Brent crude oil futures gained up to 3 percent on Friday amid tensions, settling at $101.29 per barrel. The US military released footage of an F-18 fighter jet striking an oil tanker attempting to run the blockade, while Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei accused the US of “vermin-like nocturnal scheming” and “lawless irresponsibility.”
