Production on Heartstopper Forever, the eagerly awaited finale to the beloved Netflix series, is well under way ahead of a planned release later this year. However, a major recast has been confirmed: Olivia Colman will not return as Sarah Nelson, Nick's mother, with Anna Maxwell Martin stepping into the role.
Colman did not appear in the third season, so her absence from the film may not be a complete surprise. Series creator Alice Oseman explained that Sarah's presence was crucial for the story, given Nick's emotional struggles. 'It felt nonsensical for her to be absent from this final chapter,' Oseman said, adding that the decision to recast rather than exclude the character was difficult.
Oseman expressed gratitude for Colman's 'beautiful performance' and welcomed Martin, praising her ability to 'perfectly embody Sarah's gentle, down-to-earth energy' in scenes opposite Kit Connor. Martin, known for BBC's Ludwig, joins veteran actor Derek Jacobi, who has an undisclosed cameo role.
Returning cast members include Joe Locke, Yasmin Finney, and Will Gao. The film, directed by Wash Westmoreland, is based on the sixth volume of the graphic novel series. A release date has not been announced, but Oseman confirmed it will premiere after her upcoming book's release on 2 July, suggesting a debut later this year.
