In an exclusive report from the Cannes Film Festival, a powerful new biopic about British boxing legend Michael Watson has garnered support from heavyweight champions Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua. The film, titled The Force – The Michael Watson Story, chronicles the life of Watson, now 61, who suffered devastating brain injuries during his 1991 WBO super-middleweight title fight against Chris Eubank at White Hart Lane. The incident left Watson in a 40-day coma and permanently paralysed, but his remarkable recovery culminated in completing the London Marathon in 2003.
Film Premiere and Release
The biopic is set to premiere on 20 September, with a worldwide release on 21 September—exactly 35 years after the fateful bout. Directed by Sean Cronin and produced by Magnificent Films, the movie also explores the landmark legal case that led to major reforms in boxing safety standards, changes that continue to shape the sport today.
Cast and Reactions
Upcoming Brazilian actor Victor Hugo, 31, portrays Watson. Hugo, who was not born at the time of the tragedy, met Watson during preparation and was deeply moved by his strength. “He's been through so much but he's just the most humble, kind man. He's got an incredible sense of humour,” Hugo told the Mirror. He recalled Watson visiting the set during filming of the fight scene, leaving everyone emotional. “The second Michael stepped on set, everyone just became overwhelmed with emotions. I had to actually fight back tears,” Hugo said.
Chris Eubank is portrayed by newcomer Michael Gukas, who bears an uncanny resemblance to the 90s-era boxer. The cast also includes portrayals of boxing icons such as Nigel Benn, Gerald McClellan (played by Top Boy star Khali Best), Frank Bruno, Barry Hearn (played by Nick Moran of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels), Don King, and Muhammad Ali.
Support from Boxing Stars
Director Sean Cronin confirmed that Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua are expected to attend the premiere, which may be held at the Royal Albert Hall. “It's going to be a big deal. Anthony Joshua's going to be there, Tyson Fury, too. It's a huge boxing story,” Cronin said. He added that the production had around 4,000 extras, with only four requesting expenses, reflecting the immense love for Watson. “What happened to him has given him a different kind of life but he’s never given up. Ever,” Cronin stated.
Watson’s Legacy
The film’s tagline, “Not all of the fights happen in the ring,” encapsulates Watson’s resilience. Hugo noted that Watson remains friends with Eubank and believes they may appear together at the premiere. The biopic has already caused a stir at Cannes, with Hugo saying, “I’ve understood the weight of what an amazing person Michael is.” The film promises to be a stirring tribute to a man whose spirit transcended the sport.
