Frantic Push for Ukraine Peace Deals and Counter Deals

There have been deals and counter deals in the frantic push to bring peace to Ukraine, as diplomatic efforts intensify. Pjotr Sauer, The Guardian's Russian affairs reporter, reports on the flurry of activity aimed at ending nearly four years of war that has devastated Ukraine and killed hundreds of thousands.

Initially, a 28-point plan was pushed by Trump last Wednesday as a solution. By the weekend, a redrafted 19-point proposal emerged, seemingly less skewed towards Russia. By Tuesday, at a summit in Abu Dhabi, US, Russian and Ukrainian officials were hammering out a third version.

Sauer described the pace as staggering, noting meetings in Geneva, European peace plans, and the Abu Dhabi summit all within a week. Rumours suggest Zelenskyy may fly to Washington to meet Trump, and US officials may visit Moscow to meet Putin.

Ukraine now says it broadly accepts the plan, pending resolution of unnamed details. However, it remains uncertain whether Russia will be easily persuaded to agree to the terms.
