FCDO Issues Travel Alert for UK Passport Holders Visiting 29 European Nations
FCDO Alert for UK Travellers to 29 European Countries

The UK's Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has issued a significant travel alert to British passport holders planning visits to 29 countries across Europe. This advisory specifically highlights popular destinations such as Spain, France, and Italy, among others.

New EU Border Checks Post-Brexit

This alert follows the implementation of new regulations that have taken effect in the aftermath of Brexit. In a recent social media update, the FCDO stated: "Travelling to the Schengen area with a UK passport? The EU has introduced new border checks. You may need to create a digital record when you arrive - this can include giving fingerprints or having your photo taken."

List of Affected Schengen Countries

The Schengen zone, which is impacted by these changes, comprises the following 29 nations:

Clarification for Greek Travel

However, in an earlier update, the FCDO provided a clarification regarding travel to Greece. Greek authorities have indicated they will not collect fingerprints or photos for UK travellers as part of the EU's new border checks. Those journeying to Greece are advised to "follow advice from authorities on the ground", with the FCDO noting that residents should present their residence documents at passport control.

Understanding the EU's Entry/Exit System (EES)

The European Union's Entry/Exit System (EES) is a new digital border framework that has altered the requirements for British travellers heading to the Schengen area. This system mandates the creation of a digital record for non-EU visitors, which may involve biometric data collection.

Importantly, there is no need for travellers to take any action prior to arriving at the border, and EES registration is completely free of charge. It is also crucial to note that the EES does not apply when travelling to the Republic of Ireland or Cyprus, which are not part of the Schengen agreement.

This development marks a significant shift in travel protocols for UK citizens post-Brexit, emphasising the importance of staying informed about evolving border regulations. The FCDO continues to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary.
