Zelenskyy Defies Russian Narrative as Europe Joins Ukraine Peace Talks
Europe scrambles to join US-led Ukraine peace talks

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has forcefully pushed back against what he describes as a narrative 'peddled by Russia' that Ukraine cannot successfully defend itself, insisting that pressure for peace must be applied to Moscow, not Kyiv.

European Push for Influence in Peace Process

The comments come as European governments are actively working to establish their influence in US-led peace talks aimed at ending the Russian war on Ukraine. Further crucial discussions are anticipated as early as next week.

A central and legally complex issue remains high on the agenda: finding a way to use frozen Russian assets to fund Ukraine's defence and recovery. This proposal continues to be a top priority for European leaders as they seek concrete ways to support Kyiv.

Europe's Defence in the Spotlight

Alongside diplomatic efforts, there is a growing focus on bolstering Europe's own military capabilities. In a significant move, French President Emmanuel Macron is set to unveil proposals today for a new voluntary military service designed to strengthen national defences without reinstating regular conscription.

The plan aims to significantly increase France's number of reservists, with a target of 100,000 by 2030. Macron is expected to clarify that these new volunteers would not be deployed on overseas missions, such as a potential future peacekeeping operation in Ukraine, in an effort to address domestic criticism of the scheme.

The broader theme of enhancing national and European military capacity, including potential participation in a future Ukraine mission, is also scheduled for discussion during talks in Berlin between Germany's Friedrich Merz and Estonia's Kristen Michel.
