Comedy Legends Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence Celebrate New Granddaughter
Hollywood's iconic comedy stars Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence have officially entered grandparenthood. Their eldest children, Eric Murphy and Jasmin Lawrence, have welcomed their first baby together, a daughter named Ari Skye.
A Joyous Announcement at Prestigious Awards Ceremony
Eddie Murphy confirmed the happy news during the American Film Institute achievement award ceremony on April 18. "They just had a baby girl," Murphy revealed to E! News. "They just had her two weeks ago, or a week ago. Yeah, Ari Skye."
The proud grandfather shared his perspective on parenting advice during the emotional moment. "You know, your kids don't go by your advice. Your kids go by the example you set. They watch you," Murphy explained with characteristic humor. "The stuff you be saying, they don't even pay that s*** no mind. They watch and see what you do. So, I don't give a lot of advice."
A Family Union That Surprised Fans
The connection between these two legendary comedy families began when Eric Murphy and Jasmin Lawrence announced their engagement in November 2024. This union brought together the stars of classic comedies Boomerang (1992) and Life (1999) as family members.
Jasmin, 30, and Eric, 36, tied the knot in a private wedding ceremony in May 2025 before announcing their pregnancy in February with an emotional Instagram post. "Thank you Jesus for the greatest gift," the couple captioned a black-and-white photo showing Eric cradling Jasmin's baby bump.
Martin Lawrence's Heartfelt Reaction to Grandfather Status
Martin Lawrence expressed overwhelming joy about becoming a grandfather. "What a blessing to start the day!" the comedian wrote on Instagram. "My heart is overflowing with love and gratitude after the announcement of my first grandchild!"
The 61-year-old continued with heartfelt emotion: "Watching [Jasmin] and [Eric] begin this journey into parenthood means everything to me. Family is everything — and this moment is nothing less than a blessing from God. Welcome to the next generation!"
An Unexpected Connection Beyond Famous Fathers
Interestingly, the couple's connection didn't originate through their famous fathers, despite Murphy and Lawrence having worked together on two films and maintaining a friendship. In 2022, Jasmin revealed that her uncle actually introduced her to Eric.
"It wasn't even our dads — and they've done two movies together," she told InTouch. "They're friends. I don't even know. It's crazy. But we met through my uncle, and we became really good friends. We bonded on a lot of things. Obviously, we have similar backgrounds, so we understood each other on a certain level."
Comedic Banter Between the New Grandfathers
Over the years, both comedians have publicly joked about their children's union. Eddie Murphy previously teased Martin Lawrence about traditional wedding responsibilities, suggesting the father of the bride would need to cover the wedding costs.
"We thought it was cool," Eddie told CBS Sunday Mornings about the relationship. "They're both beautiful. They look amazing together. And it's funny, everybody's like, 'What! That baby gonna be funny.'"
A Night of Honors and Emotional Moments
The baby announcement came on the same night Eddie Murphy received the prestigious AFI lifetime achievement award. The ceremony drew a standing ovation as Murphy took the stage visibly moved by the honor.
"This is a special moment. I wish y'all could feel what I'm feeling, see what I'm seeing. I almost teared up. I'm going to get backstage and cry," he told the emotional crowd.
Fellow filmmaker Spike Lee celebrated Murphy's contributions during the presentation, stating: "Eddie made us laugh and made our nation feel better. I took a camera and told stories on how our nation could be better. ... We both pushed culture forward...Every step of this journey, Eddie has been true to himself."
Eric Murphy is the eldest of Eddie's ten children, while Jasmin Lawrence is the eldest of Martin's three daughters, making this new addition particularly significant for both legendary comedy families.
