Comedy legends Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence are now grandfathers-in-law after their eldest children welcomed a baby girl. Murphy confirmed that his son Eric and Lawrence’s daughter Jasmin had a daughter named Ari Skye earlier this month.
Speaking at the American Film Institute (AFI) lifetime achievement award ceremony on Saturday, Murphy told E! News: “They just had a baby girl… They just had her two weeks ago, or a week ago. Yeah, Ari Skye.” The couple announced their engagement in November 2024 and married in a private ceremony in May 2025.
Reflecting on becoming a grandfather, Murphy said he had no advice for the new parents. “Your kids don’t go by your advice. Your kids go by the example you set,” he said. “They watch you… The stuff you be saying, they don’t even pay that no mind. They watch and see what you do. So, I don’t give a lot of advice.”
Jasmin, 30, and Eric, 36, shared the news of their pregnancy on Instagram in February with a black-and-white photo of Eric cradling Jasmin’s bump. “Thank you Jesus for the greatest gift,” they wrote. Martin Lawrence expressed his joy on social media, calling the arrival of his first grandchild “a blessing from God”. He added: “Family is everything — and this moment is nothing less than a blessing from God. Welcome to the next generation!”
Eric is the eldest of Eddie Murphy’s ten children, while Jasmin is the eldest of Martin Lawrence’s three daughters. Jasmin revealed in 2022 that she and Eric met through her uncle, not through their famous fathers, despite the elder pair having made two films together. “It wasn’t even our dads… We bonded on a lot of things. Obviously, we have similar backgrounds, so we understood each other on a certain level,” she said.
Murphy was honoured with the AFI lifetime achievement award on Saturday, receiving a standing ovation. “This is a special moment… I almost teared up. I’m going to get backstage and cry,” he told the audience. Filmmaker Spike Lee praised Murphy, saying: “Eddie made us laugh and made our nation feel better… We both pushed culture forward… Every step of this journey, Eddie has been true to himself.”
