Delta Goodrem finished fourth in the Eurovision Song Contest, as Bulgaria secured its first-ever win with the song 'Bangaranga'. The Australian singer performed her power ballad 'Eclipse' in Vienna, Austria, early on Sunday morning Australian time.
Goodrem, a former Neighbours star, was considered one of Australia's best chances for the top prize since Dami Im finished second in 2016. Despite the fourth-place finish, she received widespread praise for her performance, which included a sparkling golden piano and a rising platform.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese praised Goodrem, saying, 'Delta Goodrem is someone who can be very, very proud of her efforts. And all Australians are proud of Delta.' The singer thanked her supporters, stating, 'Representing Australia on the Eurovision stage and being part of this incredible community has been unforgettable.'
The contest was decided by a combination of jury votes and public televotes. Australia was tied for second with Denmark after the jury vote, but the public vote pushed Israel to second and Romania to third, narrowly ahead of Australia. Bookmakers' favourite Finland finished sixth.
The result marks Australia's second-best Eurovision performance, behind Dami Im's runner-up finish in 2016. The competition was also marked by controversy, with five countries boycotting over Israel's participation.
