China Honors Trump with YMCA Performance at State Banquet
China Plays YMCA for Trump at State Banquet

China paid tribute to President Donald Trump in a unique way at the state banquet on Thursday, concluding the evening with a rendition of the Village People's 'YMCA' – one of Trump's signature campaign songs. The Chinese Military Band performed the iconic track as the final piece of a musical program that also included 'We Are the World' and 'Can You Feel the Love Tonight.'

A Direct Appeal to Trump

The choice of 'YMCA' appeared to be a direct appeal to the president, who frequently dances to the song at the end of his rallies. A White House official confirmed to The Independent that the song was part of the planned music program. This is not the first time foreign governments have used the song to honor Trump; the South Korean military brass band played it during his visit in October.

Trump's Signature Dance

Trump began using 'YMCA' to close his campaign rallies during the 2020 presidential race. As the song plays, he performs his signature dance – rocking his hips side to side while punching the air with his fists. The routine has become a staple of his events, both domestically and internationally. Last May, he ended his address at the U.S.-Saudi investment forum with the song, despite Saudi Arabia's strict anti-LGBTQ+ laws. He also danced to it after addressing U.S. troops in Japan last year, and influencer Jake Paul joined him in dancing at a Kentucky rally. Even Argentine President Javier Milei danced to it at the Conservative Political Action Conference.

Village People Perform for Trump

The song has become so closely associated with Trump that the Village People have performed it live at high-profile events featuring him. They played at his inaugural ball in January 2025 and at the FIFA World Cup draw in December.

Strengthening US-China Relations

China's decision to include 'YMCA' in the music program was part of a broader effort to showcase goodwill and strengthen bilateral ties. During the banquet, President Xi Jinping gave a toast, stating that China's rejuvenation and Trump's 'Make America Great Again' agenda go hand in hand, according to a translation from the New York Times. Trump responded by thanking Xi for a 'magnificent welcome' and invited him to visit the White House in September. The Chinese Military Band also played 'America the Beautiful' during the event.
