Casualty's beloved nurse Charlie Fairhead is making a surprise return to the BBC medical drama, two years after actor Derek Thompson retired from the role. The 78-year-old actor has already begun filming scenes ahead of the show's 40th anniversary in September.
Longest-serving cast member returns
Thompson, who played Charlie Fairhead for 38 years, last appeared on the show in 2024. He starred in nearly 900 episodes, having featured in the very first episode in 1986. At the time of his departure, he said: "The time has come for me to hang up Charlie's scrubs."
Sources have confirmed that both the character and the actor are returning to Holby City General Hospital. Speaking to The Sun, a source said: "Fans will be delighted to see Charlie. The character was never killed off and the door was left open for a return." They added that Thompson's return is likely to be an "appearance" rather than a permanent comeback.
Final episode and post-Casualty roles
In his final episode, Charlie was stabbed by a patient but survived, leaving the hospital to cheers from colleagues. Thompson described those episodes as "some of the best of my career." Since leaving, he appeared in Belfast drama Blue Lights as Robin Graham and in a 2025 episode of Vera as Gordon Spencer.
Recent cast departure
Thompson's return comes after another Casualty star, Jasmine Bayes, left the show earlier in April. Her character, Dr Kim Chang, was killed off after secretly battling an eating disorder. Bayes said filming the storyline was "tough" but praised the show's research team for ensuring the story was told truthfully and respectfully.
The Mirror approached the BBC for comment on Thompson's return.
