A24 UK has secured the television rights to Alexis Hall's popular BookTok novel 'Boyfriend Material', which was published in 2022. The book follows Luc, a neurotic and disorganised twentysomething, whose life collides with Oliver, an uptight and workaholic criminal barrister, leading to an enemies-to-lovers romance that blends heart and humour.
'Boyfriend Material' gained significant traction on BookTok, the community on TikTok that has become a powerful force in the literary world. It is the first instalment in a trilogy, with 'Husband Material' released in 2022 and 'Father Material' due out shortly. The books have been published in over 50 editions and multiple languages globally.
Hall, who also writes urban fantasy, science fiction, and romance, has seen other works optioned before, including 'Rosaline Palmer Takes the Cake' by Original Film and David Mandell in 2022. A24 UK, led by Piers Wenger and Rose Garnett, has been active in securing projects this year, including Nick Brucker's 'White Smoke', 'London Falling', and 'We Are the Dead'.
Upcoming A24 UK projects include Apple TV+'s 'Husbands', Michaela Coel's 'First Day on Earth', and 'Major Players' for Channel 4. The deal for 'Boyfriend Material' was brokered by Untitled on behalf of Sourcebooks, with Hall represented by Courtney Miller-Callihan at Handspun Literary Agency.
