The glamorous Standard Theatre Awards winners dinner at Claridges Hotel in London on Sunday night saw Hollywood stars Cate Blanchett and Rachel Zegler celebrating significant victories. The prestigious event brought together theatre's brightest talents for an evening of recognition and celebration.
Fashion and Triumph on the Red Carpet
Aussie actress Cate Blanchett, aged 56, claimed the Best Actress in a Play award for her remarkable performance in The Seagull. The acclaimed actress embodied timeless elegance in a sophisticated black velvet sculpted bodice that showcased her impeccable style. She completed this chic ensemble with a figure-hugging pencil skirt that accentuated her silhouette, while pointed heels added extra height to her already statuesque frame.
Meanwhile, rising star Rachel Zegler, just 24 years old, secured the Best Musical Performance honour for her lead role in Evita. The young actress made a stunning impression in a daringly plunging lace gown that hugged every curve of her impressive figure. Zegler opted to forgo jewellery entirely, allowing the dramatic dress to command attention with its revealing neckline and intricate detailing.
Hayley Atwell's Rare Public Appearance
Also gracing the event was actress Hayley Atwell, who was honoured for her performance in Much Ado About Nothing. The 43-year-old star made a particularly notable appearance as she arrived with her fiancé, artist Ned Wolfgang Kelly, marking one of their rare public outings together since welcoming their first child earlier in 2024.
Atwell dazzled in a striking silver gown that featured an elegant caped collar and delicate floral embroidery. She accessorised with sparkling diamond earrings and classic black heels, creating a sophisticated look that complemented her radiant appearance. Her partner Ned cut a cool figure in a tailored black suit worn over a crisp white shirt with a distinctive bolo tie.
A Private Relationship in the Public Eye
The couple, who were first romantically linked in July 2022, have maintained remarkable privacy throughout their relationship, rarely appearing together at public events. Ned proposed to Hayley during a romantic trip to Venice in April 2023, with the couple welcoming their first child approximately one year later.
Recalling the unconventional proposal to the Daily Mail, Hayley described the memorable moment: "My fiancé was in his pants in the kitchen, and there was an accordion playing outside our window—which was timed perfectly but not planned. We had rented this Airbnb that had lots of shelves with porcelain ducks on them, so it was quite a surreal set-up."
Ned had previously shared his joy about their engagement on social media, writing: "Lucky me. Arrived in Venice at 10am, around midday the love of my life and I got engaged in the kitchen of this strange apartment surrounded by ducks, with a bloke outside the window murdering 'My Way' on the accordion. A perfect start to the rest of our lives together."
Additional Winners and Celebrations
The evening saw numerous other theatre talents receiving recognition for their outstanding contributions. Sir Stephen Fry was among the notable winners celebrated during the ceremony, adding to the star-studded nature of the event.
Gracie Oddie-James received the Emerging Talent award for her role in The Lady From The Sea, while other winners including Ava Pickett, James Graham, and Gracie Oddie-James joined Blanchett, Zegler, and Atwell for celebratory photographs with the evening's host, Evgeny Lebedev.
The Standard Theatre Awards continue to highlight excellence in London's vibrant theatre scene, bringing together established stars and emerging talents for an annual celebration of theatrical achievement. This year's event particularly showcased the international appeal of London theatre, with Australian actress Blanchett and American star Zegler taking home top honours alongside British talents.
