Speaking on Fox News, Penn pointed to recent polling showing the party's favorability at just 29% (CNN) and 27% (NBC), calling them 'very serious signals' from the electorate.
Penn cautioned that without a shift, Democrats could see their support shrink to levels not seen since 1984, when they won only one state in the presidential election. He attributed the decline to progressive influence, claiming the Biden administration was 'owned by the left and Progressives,' leading to policies on the border and cultural issues that alienated voters.
Penn singled out figures like Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, arguing they were pushing 'even more radical policies' that risked further isolating the party. He praised Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer for supporting a funding bill to avoid a government shutdown, describing it as a move that 'saved the Democrats from an even bigger fiasco.'
Looking ahead, Penn predicted a 'fight for the heart and soul of the party' ahead of the 2028 presidential primaries, with no clear leader emerging until then. He expressed uncertainty about whether Democrats would return to the centre or become 'further isolated into the wilderness.'
