Fans of Nicola Walker's detective drama 'Annika' have been dealt a disappointing blow, as UKTV has confirmed there are no plans for a third series. The show, which originally aired on U&Alibi in 2023 before arriving on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, ended its second season on a cliffhanger that will now remain unresolved.
A spokesperson for UKTV told RadioTimes.com: 'We are incredibly proud of the success of Annika on U&Alibi, but there are no current plans for a third series.' The decision comes despite the show's popularity and its move to a wider BBC audience.
'Annika' starred Walker as Detective Inspector Annika Strandhed, heading the fictional Glasgow-based Marine Homicide Unit. The series, based on Walker's BBC Radio 4 audio drama 'Annika Stranded', was known for its protagonist breaking the fourth wall to address viewers directly. The cast also included Katie Leung, Jamie Sives, Ukweli Roach, Kate Dickie, and Varada Sethu, with Paul McGann as a recurring love interest.
Both seasons of 'Annika' remain available to watch on BBC iPlayer. Meanwhile, UKTV has found success with other original dramas such as 'Bookish', which has been renewed for a second season after strong ratings.
