BAFTA Judge Quits After Tourette's Outburst Controversy

BAFTA Judge Steps Down Following Controversial Handling of Tourette's Incident

In a significant development, Jonte Richardson, a judge on the BAFTA emerging talent panel, has resigned from his position. This decision comes in the wake of what he described as the 'utterly unforgivable' handling of an incident at the BAFTA awards ceremony on Sunday, involving a Tourette's sufferer's outburst that included a racial slur.

Resignation Announcement on LinkedIn

Richardson publicly announced his resignation on LinkedIn, stating that after considerable soul-searching, he felt compelled to withdraw from the judging panel. He emphasised that BAFTA's response to the unfortunate incident was unacceptable, particularly given the organisation's history of systemic racism.

In his statement, Richardson expressed his inability to continue contributing his time, energy, and expertise to an organisation that he believes has repeatedly failed to safeguard the dignity of its Black guests, members, and the broader Black creative community. He highlighted the irony of this situation, noting that this year's cohort includes incredible Black talent, such as the show 'Just Act Normal', which he praised as one of his favourites from 2025.

Criticism of BAFTA and BBC

Richardson further criticised BAFTA for refusing to acknowledge the harm inflicted on both the Black and disabled communities and for not offering an appropriate apology. He argued that remaining involved would be tantamount to condoning such behaviour. He called on BAFTA leadership to comprehend the damage caused, also implicating the BBC in the incident, and urged them to take necessary steps to ensure their production staff are more inclusive to prevent similar issues in the future.

This resignation underscores ongoing concerns about diversity and inclusion within major entertainment organisations, sparking discussions about how such incidents are managed and the broader implications for representation in the industry.
