The Beefeater in Whitley Bay, a family-friendly restaurant known for its good value and seaside views, will close its doors for the last time on September 10. It is one of more than 100 sites owned by parent group Whitbread that are shutting down.
Whitbread's restructuring plan
In May, Whitbread announced plans to close nearly 2,000 sites by the end of the year, cutting 3,800 jobs. The group said the overhaul is part of a new five-year strategy to save £250 million, driven by cost pressures from business rates and national insurance contributions.
The closures affect several popular venues in the North East. Alongside the Whitley Bay Beefeater, Brewers Fayre restaurants in North Shields and Sunderland will also close, as will the Beefeater at Broomside Park in Durham. The Bar & Block steakhouse next to the Premier Inn at The Gate in Newcastle city centre is also shutting.
Community reaction
Regulars have expressed sadness over the closure on Facebook. One wrote: 'I feel for the staff, especially the really lovely lady that’s worked there from day one.' Another added: 'I do feel for the people working there. Hope they can get fixed up elsewhere.'
