Christina Applegate has disclosed in her new memoir that she left Brad Pitt waiting at the 1989 MTV Video Music Awards after choosing to leave with Skid Row frontman Sebastian Bach instead. The actress, then 17, had invited Pitt as her date but abandoned him after the ceremony.
In her memoir You With The Sad Eyes, Applegate recounts that she and Pitt were friends before she decided she wanted more. She invited him to the awards, and he kindly drove her mother and best friend to the event. However, upon seeing Bach, Applegate made a spur-of-the-moment decision.
“I felt so powerful and sure of myself for once that when the awards show was over, I left with Sebastian Bach, not Brad Pitt,” she writes. Applegate admits that Pitt was still an up-and-coming actor at the time and “wasn’t yet THE Brad Pitt”.
After being ditched, Pitt drove Applegate’s mother and friend home, narrowly avoiding a fight with gang members at a petrol station. The incident left him angry, and Applegate says they did not speak for years. She later learned that two of Pitt’s famous girlfriends had asked if the story was true, as Pitt had told them he was still mad.
“Eventually, we agreed that I’d been a kid, and though he’d deserved much better, it was time to forgive the child who dumped him for the lead singer of Skid Row,” Applegate writes. Bach later confirmed the story, saying there was a time when he was “a hotter lay than Brad Pitt”.
