Olympic swimmer Adam Peaty has been accused of exploiting his new surname after marrying Holly Ramsay, daughter of celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay. The 31-year-old, who now competes as Adam Ramsay-Peaty, tied the knot in December amid a well-publicised rift with his own family.
Sources close to the Peaty family claim the name change is financially motivated, with one insider stating: 'As much as Adam wants to be a Ramsay, he is not. He is a Peaty. Adam has financial control and is cashing in on the Ramsay name because it opens doors.' The source added that Peaty is 'embarrassed of his roots and upbringing,' leaving his parents Caroline and Mark 'devastated.'
Peaty, originally from Uttoxeter, has reportedly begun referring to Gordon and Tana Ramsay as 'mum and dad,' a move that has angered his aunt. She accused him of disrespecting his biological father, who 'worked his hands raw and bleeding' to support his swimming career.
The feud escalated around the wedding, when Peaty uninvited his relatives except for his sister Bethany. Caroline Peaty was reportedly excluded after a clash with Gordon Ramsay at an engagement party. Bethany's attendance was seen as a betrayal by her mother.
Despite the family turmoil, Peaty is set to compete in the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Scotland. He aims to become the first British swimmer to win gold at four consecutive Games, having made his debut 12 years ago. He has won four Commonwealth medals to date.
