JJ Gabriel has been denied the chance to emulate Kobbie Mainoo's remarkable achievement of playing an FA Youth Cup final at Old Trafford, as Manchester City opted to host the showpiece at the Joie Stadium instead.
City's Decision Sparks Controversy
The 2026 FA Youth Cup final between Manchester United and Manchester City will be staged at the Joie Stadium, home to City's women's team, rather than at Old Trafford or the Etihad Stadium. City ruled out the Etihad due to ongoing work on the North Stand, which aims to add 7,000 seats before the Premier League season finale. The prospect of moving the final to Old Trafford was dismissed by City, who cited the desire to maintain home advantage for the local derby.
As a result, the final on May 14 will be watched by only around 7,000 spectators, a far cry from the 67,000 who attended United's 2022 Youth Cup final victory over Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford. Mainoo, then 17, played a key role in that 3-1 win, alongside Alejandro Garnacho, Dan Gore, and Omari Forson.
Gabriel's Stellar Season
Gabriel, 15, has been instrumental in United's run to the final, scoring the opening goal in the semi-final win over Crystal Palace, with Chido Obi sealing the result in extra time. Kai Rooney, son of Wayne Rooney, has also contributed. United's under-18s finished second in the league, pushing champions City close.
The teenager's next outing at Old Trafford could now be his first-team debut. United plan to include him in their pre-season tour, and his senior breakthrough may be imminent. Like Mainoo, he hopes to lift the Youth Cup, but will have to do so away from home.
Mainoo's Legacy
Mainoo, now 21, went on to become a first-team regular at Old Trafford after his Youth Cup triumph. He remains at the club, while Garnacho, Gore, and Forson have also had senior opportunities. Gabriel will aim to follow a similar path, but first must overcome City on their own turf.
