Roman Mars, the creator of the hit podcast 99% Invisible, has teamed up with the BBC for a new series titled A History of the United States in 100 Objects. The show, which launches this month, aims to uncover the hidden stories behind everyday items and their role in shaping American history.
The Concept Behind the Series
Inspired by the BBC Radio 4 series A History of the World in 100 Objects, Mars's new podcast coincides with the 250th anniversary of the US Declaration of Independence. Each episode focuses on a single object, exploring its design, cultural significance, and broader historical context. Mars explains that the series allows him to approach storytelling differently from his usual work on 99% Invisible, using objects as a lens to examine America's past and present.
Notable Objects Featured
- The Screw Thread: Mars describes the standardisation of screw threads as a perfect example of overlooked design that explains US industrial imperialism.
- Bundy Clock: The first employee time clock introduced the concept of clocking in and out, symbolising the commodification of time and labour efficiency.
- Gold Coin from SS Central America: A coin recovered from the 1857 shipwreck that contributed to a global financial crisis.
- Billy Possum: A failed stuffed animal named after President William Howard Taft, intended to rival the teddy bear.
- Century Safe: A time capsule from 1876 opened in 1976, containing random objects that highlight the difficulty of telling a nation's story.
- Webster's Blue-Backed Speller: A schoolbook that became a tool of liberation for newly freed Black Americans.
Roman Mars's Journey
Mars, now 51, began his career in biology, earning a degree and starting a PhD in plant genetics before dropping out to pursue radio. He launched 99% Invisible in 2010, initially producing short episodes on niche topics. The podcast grew into a global phenomenon, with over 660 episodes exploring design and hidden systems. Mars credits the rise of podcasting for his success, noting that his mellow voice might not have fit traditional radio.
Production and Philosophy
Mars records from a small studio in Berkeley, California, speaking close to the microphone to create an intimate listening experience. He remains committed to audio-only productions, dismissing the trend toward video podcasts. 'These are documentary shows where we put a bunch of people's voices together in different ways. It couldn't work any other way,' he says.
A History of the United States in 100 Objects will be released weekly from 19 May on BBC Sounds and 99% Invisible.
