Principal and Three Teachers Deny Assault Charges in Regional NSW School Case
In a significant legal development, four teachers, including the principal of a regional New South Wales school, have pleaded not guilty to charges of assaulting two students. The allegations, brought forward by NSW police, claim that the educators attacked the boys at the school between August 2024 and June 2025.
Details of the Charges and Court Proceedings
On Tuesday, lawyers representing the accused teachers entered not guilty pleas for all four individuals at the Queanbeyan local court. The teachers did not appear in person for the hearing. According to police reports, a man and two women are each facing one charge of common assault against one of the boys in separate incidents, alleged to have occurred between February and June 2025.
Additionally, another man is separately charged with assaulting one of the boys on two occasions: once in September 2024 and again between May and June 2025. This man also faces a charge of common assault against another boy in August 2024.
Investigation and Response from Authorities
The charges were announced by NSW police in March as part of a joint investigation involving community justice in Queanbeyan and the NSW education department. For legal reasons, the names of the teachers and the specific school involved cannot be published. Police have confirmed that none of the teachers, who are currently on bail, are working at the school at this time.
A spokesperson for the state education department expressed deep concern over the allegations, stating, "[Alleged] behaviour of this kind is unacceptable in any school." The spokesperson emphasized that the safety and wellbeing of students and staff are top priorities, assuring that the school remains appropriately staffed to support continuity of learning for students. The matter has been reported to the department's professional and ethical standards directorate.
Next Steps in the Legal Process
The case is expected to return to court in June for further proceedings. This incident highlights ongoing issues related to student safety and educator conduct in educational settings across New South Wales.
