Plaid Cymru Leader Vows to Form Minority Government

Plaid Cymru leader Rhun ap Iorwerth has declared his intention to form a minority government in Wales, following a historic election that saw his party secure the largest number of seats in the Senedd. Speaking outside the Welsh Parliament, he hailed a 'new beginning' for the nation and asserted that no Prime Minister 'can cast Wales aside or turn a blind eye to our needs'.

Election Result and Minority Government Plans

Plaid Cymru won 43 seats in the Senedd, falling short of an outright majority but emerging as the largest party. Mr ap Iorwerth told reporters that during the campaign he had 'made it clear that my desire, were we able to, would be to form a minority government'. He added that it was 'clear now we are in that position', signalling his readiness to lead a government without a majority.

Victory Speech and National Anthem

In his victory speech on the steps of the Senedd, Mr ap Iorwerth emphasised that Wales could no longer be ignored by Westminster. The conclusion of his press conference was marked by a spontaneous rendition of the Welsh national anthem, Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau, sung by a crowd of Plaid supporters, which drowned out his final responses to journalists' questions.

The election outcome marks a significant shift in Welsh politics, with Plaid Cymru poised to take the reins of government for the first time. Mr ap Iorwerth's commitment to a minority administration reflects a strategy to govern through negotiation and consensus-building, rather than seeking a coalition. The party's focus will now turn to forming a government that can address key issues such as health, education, and economic development in Wales.
