Grey's Anatomy showrunner Meg Marinis has shared the "painful" conversations behind the departure of long-running characters Dr. Teddy Altman and Dr. Owen Hunt. The couple, portrayed by Kim Raver and Kevin McKidd, received a rare "happy ending" in the season 22 finale, relocating to Paris with their children.
An Iconic Death Considered
Marinis revealed that she had considered a more tragic exit for Owen, including an "iconic Grey's Anatomy death," but ultimately decided against it. "I love Owen too much," she explained. "Killing him would have felt like a betrayal of his growth and his relationship with Teddy."
Open-Ended Future
The showrunner intentionally kept their exits open-ended, expressing a desire for both characters to return for guest appearances in future seasons. "We wanted to leave the door open," Marinis said. "Their story isn't necessarily over forever."
Both McKidd and Raver issued statements expressing gratitude for their time on the medical drama. Owen first appeared in 2008, while Teddy joined in 2009. Their departure marks the end of an era for the long-running series.
